Running the electronics

The Night Mare is performed alongside sampled electronics, all derived from a field recording of a train. There are two ways to run them.

Max patch

standard version

How it runs

Square cues in the score are triggered by hand, by a sound engineer at the spacebar or a musician with a foot pedal. Circled cues proceed automatically.

Click

The conductor follows a click from the beginning to letter F, then beats time freely.

Logic session

backup · click only

How it runs

The electronics are fixed to a click track. Press play at the top of the session and it runs to the end, with no cueing and no foot pedal.

Click

The conductor follows the click for the entire piece, including after letter F, where the Max version is free.

Documentation

Technical requirements

  • Mac or PC running Max (free at cycling74.com; the free read-only version is fine), or Logic for the backup
  • Audio interface with 3 outputs (stereo plus conductor click)
  • Foot pedal or spacebar for triggering cues (Max only)
  • Earpiece for the conductor
  • Stereo speakers

Amplification (optional, preferred)

  • Ideally amplify all instruments, with a hall reverb throughout, to blend with the electronics
  • The high range of the piano and the flute air sounds may need boosting
  • Not needed in a small, resonant space
  • The patch includes reverb
