Electronics
General note
Most works run in Max (free read-only version available). All patches are current as of July 1, 2024, and work on Mac and Windows. Keep all files in the same folder structure and review the included readme before use.
A few works involve simple playback only: A Natural History of Vacant Lots, Barnes Dances, Corridor of Uncertainty, How to Breathe Underwater, The Matteo Songbook, and Wind Phone. They can be played back in any DAW (Ableton, Logic, Max) or—for Wind Phone—in any audio player including QuickTime.
Foot pedals
In solo works, cues can be advanced by the performer with a foot pedal mapped to the spacebar, or by a sound engineer at the keyboard. The composer recommends the Pageflip Firefly (Bluetooth). Standard MIDI sustain pedals connected via USB or MIDI keyboard also work if properly programmed. Contact me for specific MIDI or spacebar alternatives.
Amplification
Amplification is not usually required, though most electro-acoustic works benefit from light reinforcement for clarity and balance. If amplifying, high-quality close-miked microphones are recommended. All patches include a suggested reverb setting for the performance space.
Settings
All patches save their settings automatically on close—even in the free, read-only version of Max. Your adjustments will persist across sessions without manual intervention.
